From Fat to Fit and Fabulous

By Gregg Gillies I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Kate Stewart. In this interview, you’ll pick up some great tips from Kate on weight training, nutrition, motivations and planning all aspects of your fitness program. Even more than that, you’ll be inspired by Kate’s story and what she’s overcome to get where she is today. Keep a couple of things in mind. Kate works full time, and she’s a single mother of a special needs child. And you’re going to tell me that you can’t find the time to train and eat right? If you want to stay young, both in how you feel and how you look, a proper weight training, cardio and nutrition program is the fountain of youth - not diet drugs, or dangerous surgeries. And oh yeah, Kate managed to lose about 70 pounds and now competes in fitness competitions! Gregg: What problems have you had as far as staying motivated and disciplined to stick with your nutrition program and hit the gym on a consistent basis? With my readers and clients, I’ve found motivation and discipline to stick with a program to be their biggest obstacle. Did this come easy to you or were their tricks you used along the way to stick with your program? Kate: Oh my, this is never easy even for the best of the best. If it was easy no one would need to lose weight and we would all look stage ready all of the time. I have many friends that compete in the Pro’s and even they struggle from time to time. I have to make the time and the workouts work for me and my lifestyle. What works for one person and their schedule may not work for someone else. I think that my biggest obstacle that comes up from time to time is just the stress of making it all work and come together. I am a single parent of one child that has several learning disabilities and finding a balance between his needs and my needs sometimes is a struggle. Not to mention the needs of having a relationship with my boyfriend of seven years. I had to realize it’s ok to ask for help sometimes. Another huge obstacle for me was my own self esteem issues. I wasn’t just working on myself from the outside but I was working on helping the girl inside that was staring at me in the mirror. For motivation I set mini goals. I am not overly fond of the long term goal but derive much more pleasure from setting little goals and then reaching them and setting new ones. When you see you are making your little goals such as lose X pounds this week, etc., then that is fuel for the next goal. Gregg: How did you get started with your lifestyle? In other words, what changes did you make, or planning did you do, to give yourself the best chance at success? Kate: I had to hit an all time low in my life before I took a long hard look at where I was and where I was going. Many tragic things had happened for so many years straight that I had lost who I was inside as well as not recognizing myself on the outside. My mother passed away from a terminal illness, I had a sister that passed away within a year of cancer and within two months my son was born three months premature and my marriage completely fell apart. My ex-husband told me countless times that my life had too much trauma. I started with little things such as reading all the self help books I could find on weight loss and nutrition. I tried everything from weight watchers, South Beach and Atkins. Finally I read the book Body For Life. It really changed my ideas of dieting, and fitness from that point. Until I had read the book…I really had only done cardio. I trained for a couple of marathons and really burnt the calories leaving me slender but I didn’t have a shape. So I started eating several times a day, backed off of all the cardio and started weight training. I absolutely loved the physique I was obtaining and the nice rounded look of my muscles. I wanted more. I am now a firm believer that you can plan for a lifetime to make changes without doing a thing. You just have to decide that you are going to DO IT! Gregg: Preparing for a figure or bodybuilding contest is a completely different world from regular old training and eating “right.” Even the most motivated and disciplined people can struggle to stick with their plan. Most people look at athletes and think it comes easy to them but even you (and I!) can struggle with our motivation at times. What tips keep you motivated through contest preparation that the everyday person can use in their fight to get and stay in shape? Kate: Well, again nothing comes easy even for the pro’s. I believe that the best success anyone will have in preparing for a show is to plan, plan, plan. I spend my Sundays preparing and measuring out foods and putting them into containers. This makes my weekdays and packing much quicker and easier and takes the guesswork out of what you will eat each day. The diet is 90% of the success so I take a great deal of time planning my meals. Never leave home without your cooler of food and water. You never know when something might pop up or change and you don’t make it back home before that next meal. Also remember there is a great deal of the contest prep that is totally mental. For example…today is day one of my next contest prep. I am already thinking about food nonstop even though I am not hungry at all. During these times I tell myself that food is just fuel, nothing more. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn’t. As far as the exhaustion that comes from so much training…I have no advice. It’s just something I do if I want to get on that stage with my best physique yet. You just do it. Gregg: Most people think competitors just have to focus on training and eating right but most of us work full time. You have the same challenges everyone else has as far as time, yet you have to be more disciplined than the average person who just wants to get in shape. What problems did you have to overcome in order to stay on track with your fitness program? Some of the popular excuses I’ve heard from people I’ve trained include “not enough time”(both for exercising and eating right), “eating healthy is too expensive”, “don’t see results fast enough”, “weights will make me big and bulky”, “have trouble sticking with an exercise routine”. What were the obstacles you had to overcome? Kate: For me it wasn’t that I didn’t have enough time. (which I didn’t) I asked myself…if someone offered me an all expensepaid three month long vacation around the world, would you take it? OF COURSE I WOULD! Well, if I could make the time to do something like that then I could make the time to take care of my body. Create a healthier lifestyle and stay around on this earth to watch my grandchildren grow up. Time was not going to be an issue. The hardest part for me was the time that it took me away from my family. I have a son that has several learning disabilities and needs his mother desperately. I had to fit him into what I was doing for me as much as possible. There were many days that he actually went and worked out with me. The other huge obstacle was that I found that there were so many people that just did not understand. They all wanted a healthier body and a healthy lifestyle but no one wanted to do the work. It was always, “One bite won’t kill you” or “You never spend time with us anymore”. I did not have support at all in my daily life other then at the gym and with my family. I found out that as the body changes, the world can become full of haters. There were so many people that just started to not like me just because I was changing myself. It was and still is quite hurtful. People stereotype me as arrogant without even getting to know that really I have tons of self esteem issues just like everyone else. I am just choosing to do something about it. Gregg: How did you overcome those problems? What specific techniques did you use to make your dreams a reality? Kate: If you make a schedule to include training, cardio, work and at home responsibilities and stick to it, you can do it. It takes time and a lot of discipline. Once you get used to it, you don’t want to go back to your old habits. For example during off-season, I didn’t HAVE to get up at 4:00 am for cardio but I did anyway. I did this because I didn’t want to have to get used to doing it all over again at that time of day. Gregg: Moving forward and knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently, if anything? Kate: I wouldn’t change a thing except maybe wish that I didn’t have to work a full time job. Being dedicated to a sport or this sport is a lifetime commitment and a lifetime learning experience. I know that I may never make it to a Pro card and that’s ok with me. I have become a pro on my own by losing over 70lbs, changing my life and being proud in my own skin. Gregg: What would you have done the same way, and will continue to do, going forward? Kate: Having my Trainer/Nutritionist, Kim Oddo. He has been so good to me and patient and supportive in all that I do. I could not have done this without him. He takes all my guess work out of my programs. I do exactly as I am told and I succeed because of his expertise! I love my KO! Gregg: Do you feel that ongoing feedback and motivational tools would help in maintaining a fitness program? I always encourage my clients to take pictures periodically. Kate: Absolutely. All good trainers will ask for this for reason. My trainer has told me before that if he can make me look good in pictures then in person look out. Pictures are an incredibly great idea. Sometimes we don’t think we are changing and you take pictures a couple of weeks later and it’s like WOW…where did that come from. I also have a great mentors in the business that are so encouraging to me. I can ask questions, air my ugly thoughts or even if just needing to talk. They are there for me. Gregg: If you were to advise a close friend or family member how to follow in your fitness footsteps, what would you tell them? Kate: I wouldn’t think of it as following in my footsteps. We are all so individual in every way. You have to like what you are doing and find a way that suits you. Not everyone wants to look like a figure competitor. Find what you enjoy, work out a schedule so you can work it into your lifestyle and make the commitment to stick to it. Gregg: What’s a typical day for Kate Stewart when it comes to training and nutrition? Kate: Get up at 4:00 am and hit the gym for morning cardio Home at 6:00 am and get the family showered, fed, lunches made and out the door by 7:00 7:30 to 5:00 pm I am at my full time job 5:30 Back at the gym for evening cardio and weight training. I start my meals at 6:00 am and eat every three hours right up until bedtime. (which is usually about 9:30PM) My meals consist of lean protein such as egg whites, protein drinks, chicken breast and fish. Good carbs such as brown rice and yams and lot’s of green veggies. Gregg: What are your future fitness plans? Kate: I have a very busy 2007 planned. First stop will be the Arnold Classic Amateur. Then I am planning on the Emerald Cup. It will depend on how those two competitions go if I will then go on and do Jr. USA’s or if I will do the Orange County and then pick up towards the middle summer some National level competitions. Maybe Vegas. I am planning on about 5 or 6 competitions over the next 8 months. It’s going to be a very busy season. Gregg: Feel free to add anything important you think I may have missed. Include any pics you want as well. Kate: LOVE YOURSELF! I want to thank Kate for such an inspiring and motivational story. If you can’t get motivated to get your own weight training, cardio and nutrition plan into high gear after reading this, I’m not sure anything will give you the kick in the butt you need. Why I Wrote Russian Brides: How to Woo, Win, and Wed the Woman of Your Dreams

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By John Kunkle Five years ago, I was single and lonely. I had just ended my third long term relationship in ten years. I vowed that I wasn’t going to search for a mate from the standpoint of ‘libido’ anymore. I wasn’t going to let things ‘just happen.’ I was going to be more scientific in my search. I was going to approach my search for a potential mate like a job search. I was going to ‘interview’ women as though they were job candidates. I met plenty of women over the next year. I ‘interviewed’ about twenty-five of them. No, my purpose wasnt to be intimate with them. I ‘interviewed’ them. My overwhelming discovery was that the women I was involved with in my previous relationships were really more of a match for me than any of the women I had interviewed in the last year since those relationships had ended. In other words, I had met the best women for me and my relationships still failed. I thought about this a lot. What it said to me was that it wasn’t the type or the quality of the women I had met that was wrong, it was that the commitment level wasn’t there. As soon as life’s fortunes turned, as soon as somebody ran up the credit card or burned the roast, they were out the door. I joked with my friends that they should change the wedding vows. You know the ones: ‘in sickness and in health; for richer or for poorer; for better or for worse; until death do you part.’ The revised vows should read: for better not worse; for richer not poorer; for health not sickness; till somebody better comes along. This isn’t just about women. Men are guilty of this too. Look at the number of politicians, celebrities, or executives in our country who jettison their spouse when the latest and greatest inspiration comes along. The missing ingredient was COMMITMENT. My friend Tom defines commitment this way: Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of our intentions, and the actions which speak louder than words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of, the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism. One day I got an unsolicited email from ICQ asking if I wanted to post my picture and bio on their website. I figured, ‘aw, what have I got to lose.’ I spent an hour writing up my bio and emailed it to them along with a photo of me. One definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. I figured that the way I found a mate in the past wasnt working, so I was willing to try something different. About two days later, I got an email from a thirty-year-old woman from Ukraine. I was honest in my bio. My age at the time was forty-five. I am average looking for my age. Certainly no movie star. This woman was young, beautiful, educated, and spoke English fairly well. She had a master’s degree in engineering and spoke five languages. We started emailing each other and soon we were corresponding every day. Before I knew it, we had a torrid letter writing romance going. Soon I was calling her on the telephone. After several months, she asked me to come and see her. I arranged a ten-day trip together through Austria. After a few days, it was obvious to me that we were not destined to be together for the rest of our lives. But let me tell you, these Russian women get under your skin. They are beautiful, intelligent, charming, feminine, passionate, manipulative, conniving, and thoroughly engaging. John has been successfully married to a Belarussian wife for over five years. He has traveled extensively through Russia and other CIS countries. He will tell you why you should consider Russian women, how to meet them, how to bring your special woman home, and how to survive married life.http://www.russian-luv.com/kind.html Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=John_Kunkle http://EzineArticles.com/?Why-I-Wrote-Russian-Brides:-How-to-Woo,-Win,-and-Wed-the-Woman-of-Your-Dreams&id=359592 mt had pisgah still united too methodist he church also in much alpharetta, said ga at the with gospel than of never the did blues did sound any recording or sound those recording also picture take of have jesus then with might children my how see to see do you a while church here name much tag at

Ten Commandments of Fat Burning!

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Rodger Ruge The following The Commandments of fat burning are my recipe for staying lean year round. If you follow these time tested rules you will become a fat burning machine, stoking your metabolism and your internal furnace of calorie consumption to be more efficient in getting rid of that excess fat that has been dogging you forever. These strategies are simple, easy to implement and powerful in their results. So, lets get ready to burn! 1. Check your greed at the door. The best way to keep that metabolism stoked to the highest levels of efficiency is to make sure you eat several SMALL meals throughout the day. Many people eat a sparse breakfast, have a quick bite at lunch and then belly up to the feeding trough at the end of the day for a huge dinner, usually with a second helping and desert too! Well, no wonder, your body is starving by the time you get there. Oh, by the way, eating too little actually slows your metabolism down! Bottom line, recent research from the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology showed that eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day helps to burn fat. You will also enjoy the fact that you will not be hungry when you are eating 5 or 6 meals a day. Keep the portions small and consider using a meal replacement bar or drink for one of the meals so you dont feel like your prepping food all day long. 2. Mix up your training. The biggest mistake I see people make in the gym is coming in every day and doing the same thing. I watch people hit the treadmill, set it on a fast walk, and then walk that way for 40 to 60 minutes or more! These same people complain about how they cant loose any weightno kidding! No shock there. Your body is functioning at a level that is so low you are really not burning calories with any efficiency. You need to mix things up. Train with weights, and train on the treadmill (or whatever your favorite aerobic equipment may be) but put in some 60 second sprints every 5 minutes and get the heart rate up. There are literally thousands of ways to challenge yourself safely and if you have no idea where to start, hire a personal trainer for a couple of sessions to give you some ideas, they are worth every penny! By the way, research has shown that training with weights is one of the best ways to boost metabolic rates. 3. Drink up! Hydrate yourself, but be sensible about it. I see people all day long who are drinking way too much water. Remember, everything at some point is bad for you, even water. It puts a lot of strain on your kidneys to filter so much liquid. Moderation is the key. If you are dehydrated it will cause your body to drop your resting metabolic rateno good for burning fat! The advice we have heard for quite a while now is 8 glasses of water a day. Good advice. By the way, those sports drinks are worthless unless you are into about 90 minutes or more of intense exercise. Stick with the water as nature intended. Less calories, less sugar and easier on the body. 4. Time for some protein & fiber. Remember to eat enough protein and get plenty of fiber. Both of these are going to help increase your metabolic rate because there is a thermic effect produced by the digestion of this type of food that is much higher than a high carbohydrate meal. Yes, you still need the carbs too, at least 130 grams a day to maintain normal brain function. Also, if you eat protein and fiber as the last meal of the day and skip the carbs, research has shown this is also more efficient in burning fat while you are sleeping. 5. Skip the coffee & try Green Tea. No, Im not trying to kill your caffeine addition. Im not that stupid, although I think we are consuming way too much of the stuff. But if youre going to get a fix, why not make it healthier? We have known this for some time, but green tea actually increases fat oxidation and as an added bonus it also has good immune system building effects as well. There are many brands out there, but recommendations are 200 to 300 milligrams daily. 6. Post workout feed me NOW! Your body wants some fuel after working out and the sooner the better. Try to fuel up within 30 minutes of vigorous exercise to keep your metabolism running on high. A good way to go is to make a protein & carbohydrate meal. Try one of the many drinks out there (just watch the sugar on some of these) or make a fruit & protein smoothie at home. Added plus; you will also be helping your muscles recover faster and this will help you to be ready for the next workout sooner. 7. Get some rest, please! Ok, I know the day only has 24-hours. I know you are trying to do everything in that time and I also know you are sacrificing sleep in order to get it done. But sacrificing sleep is taking away one of your bodies ways of recovering from all that damage you do to it every day. Recovery is essential for keeping your body running at its most efficient levels. Sleep is critical to this process, not to mention all the benefits it has for your mental health as well. Shoot for at least 8-hours of quality sleep a night and you will notice huge benefits in how your body feels and you will be supporting your fat burning goals with an efficient machine. 8. The truth about alcohol. I know you dont want to hear thisbut someone must speak the truth! Alcohol is a fat burning enemy, even those of you who only indulge on the weekends. Alcohol has calories too, 7 per gram, and we know it slows your metabolism as well. Alcohol is a depressant and a powerful drug, but did you know it can also increase fat storage in cells? Sorry, but if you want a 6-pack then you need to loose the 6-pack in the frig! 9. Get enough calcium. The more we learn about calcium the more we realize it is a real friend to burning fat. This mineral is abundant in the body and current recommendations are making sure you get 1200 milligrams daily. Tasty treats like low fat yogurt and skim milk are excellent sources of calcium. Did you also know that it helps to manage estrogen levels? Believe it or not, this is also vital for men! Estrogen can be enhanced in the body by deficiencies in calcium and zinc and can lead to bloating and abdominal fat. 10. Low-glycemic meals? Huh? Ok, simple stuff really, just a fancy way of saying dont eat meals that have a high impact on blood sugar levels. The real key in your meal consumption is to make sure you are eating a mix of lean meats and complex carbs. Eating less processed food, closer to how nature intended us to eat, will help to stabilize your insulin levels. This means you will be less likely to store fat. Bottom line; good nutrition is not difficult to understand, but putting aside old habits can be daunting. Dont try to change your world overnight. Pick one commandment a month to add to your life and within a year you will be running at peak efficiency and burning fat like never before. 7 Steps to Cure Depression

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Richard Pettinger 1. Depression is often the result of negative thoughts that have been accumulating for several weeks or months. Often it may be related to an unpleasant experience such as the loss of a loved one. The first thing we should do is to try and disengage from our negative thoughts. Let go of the past and dont worry about the future try to concentrate on living in the here and now. 2. Try to talk about any problems or feeling of low self esteem with somebody who is a good listener. Often when we are able to talk about our depressed state of mind it is a relief, because we no longer feel so burdened. There is an old saying that a problem shared is a problem halved, definitely this saying has a lot of truth in it. Often the problem is that when we are depressed we dont feel like speaking to others, especially about our depression. But it is an important step and is well worth making the effort. It may be easier and more appropriate to speak with a trained counsellor rather than friends or family. It doesnt matter too much, it is fine to choose which ever you would be most comfortable with. 3. With depression often comes a feeling of lethargy and tiredness, but to do nothing can make depression more powerful. Again it requires a little effort but it is well worth trying to find more activities to do. These can have the effect of taking away the depression because your mind has something to distract it. 4. Physical Exercise. Studies show that taking moderate levels of physical exercise release chemicals which can promote a feeling of well being. For mild to medium forms of depression this can be most effective for dealing with depression. 5. Try to avoid feelings of Self-pity. When we are depressed it is easy to spend a lot of time feeling sorry with ourselves. It may sound a little harsh but this can become a self fulfilling prophecy. Try very hard not to continually follow this train of thoughts. Often we can most easily overcome depression by concentrating on something positive and good. We should feel depression is like a real poison we should always fight against. Sri Chinmoy suggests this: “The moment depression enters into your mind or vital, please feel that there is a heavy load on your shoulders. Then naturally you will try to get rid of it because you want to run the fastest.” 6. Try to give yourself goals. With depression comes frustration and de-motivation. In the beginning it is a very good idea to give yourself certain goals. This can be something quite simple like doing a certain amount of exercise per day or making an effort to stop negative thoughts. When you achieve these goals it will give you extra motivation and encouragement to keep trying to overcome depression. 7. Meditation can be a very effective way of stopping the negative thoughts, that are the root cause of depression. In meditation we learn to silence the mind and realise that our thoughts are not our real essence. Therefore we can find within ourselves our true state of mind, which is not depressed. Depression is a most painful experience never give up trying to overcome depression. Keep reminding yourself that depression can only be a temporary thing, no matter how serious the depression appears. Cheap Essential Oils - Rewarding Quality Of Essential Oils

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Bryan Josling What are cheap essential oils? The word cheap in cheap essential oils has different connotations for different people. While the term will literally mean as costing less, in the real sense it means exacting the true value of the essential oil from the buyer. Quality of essential oils is a very important feature to look for when purchasing essential oils. You purchase cheap essential oils from a local vendor not knowing that it is the result of third or fourth distillate. The quality of such a preparation will be naturally less. Essential oils are not solely purchased for the aroma and scent that they produce. Majority of the users buy it for its therapeutic values. As the quality of essential oils reduce, so does its therapeutic benefits. Nevertheless, one may have to pay a very small price for acquiring the essential oil. Therefore, while buying an essential oil, one should not look only for the price but quality as well. Quality of essential oils will determine its price. So can we say more is the price, better is the quality. Not necessarily. In most cases, this may hold true; but not in all cases. There is no scarcity of vendors who charge a high premium on their oils. This implies that buyers may have to pay a higher price for the oil than it actually deserves. On the other hand, are individuals who are obsessed with a low priced product. In essential oils too, they search for the cheapest bargain. Vendors, who are looking forward to disposing off their low quality oils, find soft targets in these people. What these people get is no good than common oil, with little or no therapeutic or aromatic benefits. Therefore, in both the above cases, it is the borrower who is losing his hard-earned money. In the first case by paying a premium on correct price; and in the second by purchasing an oil which is of no worth. This results because of no regulation by any centralised agency on the price of essential oils. Almost every vendor charges a different price for his oils. How does buyer determine the correct price of essential oil in such cases? It may be difficult for a common buyer to determine the appropriate price, but not impossible. The first thing to do when shopping for cheap essential oils will be to decide what one wants and for what purpose. If prescribed by an aromatherapist for a specific ailment, one must go about searching for that specific essential oil. Certain essential oils like lavender can be purchased over the counter and are available cheap. Alternatively, a few essential oils like sandalwood may be expensive. Even in sandalwood oil, the Indian sandalwood is preferred over the Australian sandalwood. Thus, there can be internal classifications in oils, which determine price range. Organically farmed raw materials for essential oil will also make them expensive. Second, make a list of some reputable agencies from where one would buy the essential oil. Get a price quote from these agencies. Such agencies may quote a reasonable price of their products. This helps in getting an overview of the appropriate price for each essential oil. Third, decide whether you want to buy essential oil from a local shop or want to get it shipped from outside. When shipping from outside, the buyer may not have the privilege of seeing the product in real until it is bought. So, how does the borrower decide as to the quality of essential oil? For this purpose, some vendors offer small samples. If on using the sample, the person finds it suitable, they can make the requisite order. With such a systematic manner of shopping, one can be assured of getting cheap essential oils that do not compromise with the quality. How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Arturo Ronzon A tummy tuck is a major surgical procedure that is performed to tighten and sculpt the abdominal region. The costs that are involved in a tummy tuck depend on several factors, some of which includes the age of the patient, the patients body weight and the overall state of health. When budgeting for a tummy tuck surgery, it is also important to take into account all the costs that surround the procedure as well. The best reference point when inquiring about the costs that are involved in a tummy tuck surgery would be the surgeon himself. The surgeon will not only be able to explain all the procedures involved in the tummy tuck surgery, he will also be able to explain to you how your hard earned money will be spent in your tummy tuck. This will give you a better understanding of the costs involved. When diagnosing you for a possible tummy tuck, the surgeon will able to determine if the tummy tuck procedure will be a simple one or a complex one. This will tie into the decision of possible medical prescriptions that could be involved. An anesthetist will also be involved in your tummy tuck. A simple tummy tuck can be done with local anesthetics while a complex one will be done under general anesthetics. All these factors will weigh in heavily in your final cost calculations. Even at the cheapest end of the scale, a tummy tuck will still run up to a few thousand dollars. A lot of people who want a tummy tuck done are looking at overseas specialists because they have come to realize that the costs of a tummy tuck in places such as France or Italy is much less than the US or even the UK. So-called tummy tuck holidays are born from the needs of the people who not only want to find cheaper alternatives but also from people who want to spend the recovery period away from home. Another reason would be to have a tummy tuck done away from prying eyes and nosey noses. The Real Marketing Genius

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Shawn Meldrum I spend a lot of my time reading books and listening to tapes about business and marketing. I guess that’s understandable. Many of the authors of these materials are known as experts, gurus or marketing geniuses. However, a few weeks ago I was listening to a discussion about marketing and one of the participants made a point that struck me like a ton of bricks. He said: “The only true marketing genius is the customer”. What a succinct and powerful statement! The truth of the matter is that no matter how much good advice or information or training we get in marketing, the only person’s opinion that really matters is the customers. No matter how good the idea seems to be, if the customer doesn’t respond then nothing else matters. What’s the moral? Simple. You need to constantly stay in tune with your customers interests and desires and give them what they want, how they want it, when they want it. If they don’t respond to a particular offer, you need to do your best to find out why (through follow-up surveys or any other method at your disposal). If they do respond to an offer it’s still a good idea to find out why. It may be for a different reason than you think. We should all certainly continue to study marketing and listen to what the “experts” say, but we need to give just as much (or more) attention to what our customers are saying as well. Technology Help Small to Mid Size Companies Achieve Their Financial Goals

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Judith Stolpner Today, IT solutions are aiding small and mid-sized companies alike, as they compete with Fortune 500 companies for a piece of the pie. We live in an age of fierce competitiveness, fiscal concern, and global turmoil and uncertainty. Companies are working hard to continually improve operational efficiency. Many are looking to IT (information technology) to reduce operating costs and increase efficiency by automating and streamlining existing business processes. Smart companies are achieving their business and financial goals by embracing and making technology work for them. Porcelain Patch is one such small company that has embraced Internet Technology to help improve the bottom line while enhancing customer service. Since 1938, Porcelain Patch and Glaze has prided itself on offering the finest electrostatic painting and porcelain reglazing services to homeowners, office managers and building managers all over New England. Porcelain Patch can point to over a half-century of experience and a long list of satisfied customers. At this time, the company employs 12 field technicians, 2 full time sales people and 2 customer service/marketing representatives. They have been in Watertown, MA since the mid 1960s. As the president and owner of Porcelain Patch, Jonathan Gleason is always looking for ways to further gain efficiency and maintain customer loyalty, while keeping operating costs down. He is a technology buff and a true believer in utilizing IT to gain a competitive edge. As a starting point, Jonathan recognized long ago that in todays Internet-driven business environment, a strong web presence is not only mandatory, but also it is the most valuable marketing tool that can set him apart from his competitors. He also understood that a web site can ONLY be effective if it is keeps up with the dynamic nature of the Internet and provides up-to-date information to its visitors. This, he realized, was the major challenge one that required a lot of resources. To make the web site an effective marketing tool, Jonathan commissioned Blue Robin Inc., to build a new web infrastructure for Porcelain Patch one that can be organic. The new platform was built with a powerful Content Management System (CMS) through which authorized personnel can update the content of the site on-the-fly. With its EZedit, Blue Robin focused to deliver a robust, full-featured Content Management System to Porcelain Patch with a user-friendly environment that can accommodate multiple users at the company, with varying skill levels. The CMS provides Porcelain Patch with an easy-to-use, multi-level authenticated text and HTML editor with similar features and functionalities of popular word processing applications, which their employees were already familiar with using. The company took to the implementation of the new web site with its CMS, like a duck takes to water. As a result, in 2007, the companys website has turned into one of the most cost effective and important lead generators and image builder. In such a short time frame, Porcelain Patch has transformed its marketing from using a full page in their local Yellow Pages book to a cyber-based strategy to increase revenue by generating more traffic to its web site. Another item that Jonathan had identified as a cost area was his companys traditional phone system. Beyond the cost, the phone system was posing all kinds of problems that impacted customer service and created a bottle neck. Jonathan wanted a sophisticated phone system similar to the one used by the fortune 500 companies, without the high price tag. Jonathan began looking into Voice Over IP technology (VoIP) and did a significant amount of research into what companies could provide the most useful and cost effective solutions, before committing again to Blue Robin, Inc.s Enterprise Voip phone system. The most important benefit of VoIP is its cost savings for Porcelain patch. Blue Robins Enterprise VoIP has offered significant cost savings while providing numerous new features. Jonathan had long ago understood that to compete effectively in the eWorld, his business infrastructure must have two essential components: A High-speed Internet connection and a sophisticated phone system. The arrival of VoIP technology makes it possible to say goodbye to traditional phone and PBX phone systems as well as the high cost associated with multiple phone lines. As a matter of record, the #1 reason Porcelain Patch adopted a VoIP phone system was cost, cost and cost. The Enterprise Voip system from Blue Robin is much less expensive to deploy than a traditional PBX and it has been far cheaper month-to-month than paying the large phone bills Porcelain Patch used to have. In addition to the reduced monthly cost of the Enterprise Voip phone system, the company also looked to keep the initial and any recurring charges down, as well as ensuring ease of implementation and use. Blue Robin was able to successfully meet and exceed all of Porcelain Patchs requirements. Like many corporations today, Porcelain Patch is experiencing the advantages of IT first hand as a key component of its business strategies. Jonathan will continue to use new technology to drastically change their business functions and to shift cost structures resulting in what some call the, information based organization. Implementing todays new technologies shows how a business can successfully grow from within, creating a cycle of cost control, leading to better products and services, leading to more growth.
